A Gastronomic Adventure tells the story of a young French girl who lands her first job in a gastronomic restaurant in New York. Her adventures, at the same time touching and amusing, are a good introduction to an everyday English with a gourmet flavour: restaurant scenes including ordering your meal, menus, chefs’ secrets, truffles, and foie gras.
Over 60% of the words are similar in French and English. · From a selection of 100 francophones, self-declared “useless at English’’, on reading the story, 90% realised that they understood the plot. · The story on the CD, narrated by seven English and American actors, is a living introduction to modern English and its multiple accents.
- The second part of the book and the CD contains practical exercises of everyday situations, on the telephone, at the bank, etc.
- The third part of the book is dedicated to grammar ; the fourth part presents numbers.
- The glossary of the fifth part contains the vocabulary of the CD.
THE AUTHOR FRENCH-ENGLISH REFLEX was conceived by Geneviève de Temmerman, the author and publisher of numerous school textbooks and French-English dictionaries. Of Belgian origin, Geneviève de Temmerman grew up in a tri-lingual culture, where passing from one language to another was a spontaneous reflex. It’s this approach that she wished to develop, using common language elements to take away the apprehension of communicating in a ‘foreign’ language, which in fact is not that different. FRENCH-ENGLISH REFLEX is devised from a compilation of over 350 words that are similar or familiar to both english and french speakers.
